What is counselling?

Counselling and therapy are being talked about openly more and more which is great but what actually is counselling? It can seem like a bit of a mystery and there are a lot of myths around the topic which I will be discussing in another blog post.

Counselling provides the space for you to be heard, truly heard, while you safely explore your feelings, thoughts, patterns, behaviours, relationships- this list is endless because counselling is your space to discuss your experience!

Counselling usually takes place weekly for an hour but the frequency can change depending on what you need. The way you have counselling can be flexible, I offer face to face counselling, video calls, telephone counselling and email counselling.

What does a counsellor do?

The stereotype is that a counsellor will sit, listen, nod and maybe throw in the odd sympathetic noise from time to time but this is not good counselling. Counselling is not passive, it's active and counsellors have years of training and skills to be able to hold the space and sit with you. As your counsellor I will support, encourage and help you to feel empowered to make changes, I may also challenge you to help you get to the root of what is going on for you so you can reach your goals.

There are so many reasons that people seek counselling and if you're struggling with anything then that is a valid reason to reach out! You may have a specific experience you wish to work through and process, or things might feel more vague but you know you don't feel right/satisfied/how you would like to feel. Whatever is going on please feel free to get in touch and see if we can work together
